Wood Sculpture
My sculptures often begin by chance when a friend or arborist brings me a section of tree that has been trimmed or cut down. How I shape the piece depends upon the wood’s shape, color, and texture. By contrasting rough, outer bark with its sanded and smoothed interior, I bring out the beauty of the grain and exterior texture. Underlying all of my sculptures is the idea of transformation and renewal. By excavating their sensual beauty, old trees that have been cast-off Ind a new identity.
While living in California, I also created sculptures made from queen and date palm trees. I used the long, tapering seed pods in assemblages and carved palm fronds into interlocking parts that balance in space.
