Stupa for Webster Woods 2011

Art Outside, Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, Washington

My earlier installation at Webster Woods Art Park was inspired by the similarities between the landscapes of the Himalayas and the PaciHc Northwest. With Stupa, I further explore the concept of uniting aspects of these two places and traditions.

Stupa is made from a Doko, a bamboo basket used to transport materials. I covered it with burlap, red earth, manila rope, aromatic bees wax, and a black resin called shilajit, an ayurvedic medicine. Stupa means “mound” in Sanskrit.
