33 Sculptures
Between 1984 and 1988, Jyoti carved thirty redwood posts, measuring four, six, and eight feet high, and three pieces of basswood of matching heights. He sited his 33 Sculptures at the Claremont Graduate University and Joshua Tree National Park, which was one of his favorite camping spots. Jyoti was drawn to the landscape’s uniquely shaped boulders that dramatically contrasted with the sculpted forms.
Jyoti carved and laboriously hand-sanded each piece to reveal the unique personalities of his totemic sculptures. His process unveils smooth, sensual surfaces and the abstract patterns of tree rings. Strategically excavating circular openings in the wood, Jyoti imbues his work with an ethereal quality. When sited in the landscape and bathed in light, this forest of sculptures, appears to dramatically grow out of nature.
