Western’s Chairs 2009
63 digital renderings
This series developed after a chance encounter with two photographs of designer chairs by Barbara Matilsky during a visit to the Western Gallery at Western Washington University, Bellingham. I was intrigued by the contrasts of materials (natural versus industrial), colors (neutral tones versus bright vivid hues), and textures. In the digital renderings, I combine and transform the two images into changing, kaleidoscopic compositions. Several works maintain the basic framework of the original. In others, the chairs disappear into a pointillist confetti of color. Western’s Chairs reflect the intersection where formal balance and the unexpected meet.
