Shantiko Samjhana – Remembering Peace Grove, 2002, Pharping

The third phase of “Shantiko Samjhana – Remembering Peace” took the form of a peace grove in Pharping, a well-traveled pilgrimage and watershed site. Jyoti collaborated with the Seshnaraynan Village Community who helped design and plant a forest preserve, fabricate metal fencing and benches, and restore deteriorating amenities to the site. Ekaha Pokhari Women’s Group, Gobhal Women’s Group and Janajyoti Youth Club participated and assumed responsibility for nurturing the seedlings.

The public-owned land was cleared, fenced and planted with a variety of herbal, fruit, and flowering trees that could become a source of income for the villagers. In addition, the seating around the area’s sacred tree (chautara) that had collapsed over the years, was reconstructed. The historic pati (a shelter for travelers), located within the perimeter of the project, was also repaired.

Jyoti raised money for “Remembering Peace Grove” by inviting colleagues, friends, and family across the United States and Nepal to contribute. Donors were recognized on a marble plaque at the entrance to the site and received a limited-edition print related to this ecological artwork.
